American Mangalitsa are bred from 100% Royal stock. In 2009, we imported Blonde, Red, & Swallow Belly Mangalitsa from Europe. All of which possessed old world, unaltered genetics. Since that time, we have worked to keep these genetics pure.
American Mangalitsa are raised on estate grown feed, carefully selected and harvested by the family farmers who raise our stock. Good feed and water are important to the health and vitality of our animals. Growing our own feed gives us confidence that we are providing our Mangalitsa with the best quality feed possible.
The finest hams in the world are often recognized for their soft, creamy, melt in your mouth flavor profile, which is created by oleic acid. In an effort to produce oleic acid, many farmers have to feed their pigs up to 25 pounds of acorns a day for up to 3 months. Mangalitsa are unlike those other pigs. Mangalitsa are one of the only breeds in the world that actually produce oleic acid naturally, without the need for acorns.
We do not use gestation or farrowing crates. Our livestock have constant access to enhanced indoor and outdoor facilities. Also, we make sure that our animals always have access to indoor spaces that exceed GAP standards.
Careful sustainability means good stewardship in using all that nature provides to make our Mangalitsa as comfortable as possible so they can engage in their natural behavior. Enhanced living includes but is not limited to clean, comfortable bedding from hay and corn stalks grown on our farms, lots of room indoors and open access to the outdoors, as well as clean air and natural water sources. We also maintain rigorous biosecurity protocols on our farm to help protect our livestock from illness.
Our Mangalitsa are able to roam, root, and graze outside on grass and natural forage when the weather permits. They can also seek shelter inside our hoop barns when the weather is less desirable or if they just want to be closer to each other. There’s plenty of shelter and warmth inside and when the weather is nice, we raise the curtains on the sides of our barns to allow for lots of fresh air.
Growth hormones are not legally permitted for use in raising pork by the USDA or FDA. We don’t think it’s good for pigs or people either. We don’t use them.
We take the health of animals very seriously! We are constantly researching new ways to maintain the highest levels of health and happiness for our Mangalitsa. We provide nutritious food, as well as clean water and minerals to build and support strong, natural immune systems. We also use natural antigen prevention methods to prevent our animals from becoming sick or symptomatic. We even use state of the art, nano-tech coatings on the surfaces of our buildings, which help prevent disease from airborne viruses and deconstruct germs that could infect our livestock. We have worked hard to create the cleanest environment that we can. However, we believe it is inhumane to avoid treating an animal that needs it. So, in the rare case that one of our animals needs antibiotics, we treat only that animal with the least amount required and regulated by the USDA and FDA. If an animal is treated with antibiotics, it is held back from harvest until the medicine and any residue have been naturally and completely flushed from their system.
